This is another one of my favorites. It was taken this weekend at Sunset Pond, which is a park by my house. With the way that the sun was lighting these thistles, I decided to make this a black and white photo, to emphasize the dark/light contrast. I loved how the silhouette of the plants turned out against the bright, white background. Some may also say that I “broke a rule of photography” by enhancing the sunlight so much in the top left corner, however I feel it adds a lot to the photo and definitely creates a contrast effect.

Rhythm
Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by calliemThis is one of my favorite pictures that I took. It was taken at the Como Zoo Park in the botanical area this weekend when I was at home. I feel it is a good portrayal of rhythm because of the smooth, curved repetition of the circular stairs. I really love the different colors in the bricks of the stairs, and the shadows that are present as well. This picture shows great unity, repetition, and rhythm.
Visual Weight
Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by calliemThis picture was taken underneath a bridge in my home town of Burnsville, MN. Over the years, it has slowly become a large compilation of graffiti art. I decided to use this picture for my Visual Weight demonstration because in our chapter it mentioned that writing is a subject that always attracts the eye. There are other thing going on in this photo, with different textures and colors, but the eye still can’t help but be drawn to the large word “Love” in the bottom of the photo, because it carries a lot of visual weight.
Pattern, Texture, Many
Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by calliemThis picture was also taken in my backyard at home this weekend. This is a good demonstration of Pattern, Texture, Many because it portrays both texture and many. There is great texture both in the leaves and sticks, and also in the concrete path that they are covering. Also, it is extremely clear that there is an infinite number of leaves covering that path, creating a very cool element of design.
Figure & Ground
Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by calliemThis picture was also taken in the woods behind my house. I saw this plant and decided to take a close-up shot of it, really focusing on the details of it. Because of the setting I was using on the camera, I really liked how it turned out with the background being all blurred like it is. After reading about Figure & Ground in our book, it said that most pictures have a subject and a background. One stands forward, and the other recedes. I believe that this picture accurately portrays Figure and Ground because the detailed plant clearly stands apart from the blurry, unfocused background.
Gestalt Perception
Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by calliemThis picture was taken at a park near my house this weekend. I believe it demonstrates the seventh Gestalt Law of Perceptual Organization that suggests the in order for an object to be perceived, it must stand out from its background. This single yellow flower that is drowning in a sea of smaller, white flowers clearly stands out above the rest.
Balance
Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by calliem
This picture was photographed in my backyard at home this weekend. I chose to use this to portray balance because of the lack of balance it shows. With the thin, tree swing hanging against the large, thick tree, it creates a good dynamic balance, causing the picture to be much heavier on the right side.
Perception & Depth
Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2008 by calliemThis picture was taken in the woods behind my house this weekend. I think it demonstrates Perception and Depth because I chose a subject that shows a range of distance. I think it works also because my subject (the path) is made up of warm colors, and the background is made of of cool, green colors.
